Cloverlea Primary School

Year 1

Autumn 2011 - Year 1 updates

Our first topic for this year is called ‘Amazing Me!’ We will be learning about our bodies and our five senses. We will be visiting the wildlife area to find interesting things to look at. We will also use our noses to try to guess different smells and wear blindfolds to help us to explore our sense of touch.

In history we will be considering how we change as we grown and we will be making our own personal timelines with images and captions.

In ICT, we have great fun ‘drawing’ pictures of ourselves and the teachers!

In art, we draw self portraits and make salt dough models of our faces.

We will also be visiting the wildlife area to look for signs of autumn.

Summer 2011 - Year 1 updates

We enjoyed taking part in a special themed week called ‘Put Your Hat On!’ We learnt about different types of hats from long ago and from different countries. Our home corner became a ‘hat shop’ and we interviewed some of the teachers about their favourite hats.

We especially enjoyed visiting ‘Stockport Hat Works Museum’ where we learnt about how hats were made a long time ago. We all made our own piece of felting and we even got to try some hats on! Back at school, we made mini-hats for our teddy bears and we also made hats using different materials for ourselves to wear.

As part of our ‘In My Little Garden’ topic, we have been growing bean seeds. We visited the wildlife area to find out about plants. We have also been learning about how some plants provide us with food. We really enjoyed making fresh fruit kebabs. We had to taste different types of fruit. Then we had to think about the taste, texture and colour of the fruit before making and of course – eating the kebabs! They were delicious!

Spring 2011 - Year 1 updates

Our first topic for the spring term is called ‘Home Sweet Home’. We have been busy learning about our own homes and different types of houses. We looked at different patterns in buildings and then drew and painted patterns of our own homes. We also made clay tiles which was fun!

We have also been learning about the journey of a letter from the post box to our house. We have changed our role play corner into a ‘Cloverlea Post Office’. We hope to write our own letters and post them at the post-box near school.

In history, we have been learning about Victorian schools. We have looked at lots of interesting objects like a cane, finger restraints, an ink pen and an abacus. We enjoyed trying to write on slate boards, but we did not like having to rub our work out after! We also made our own information pages.

We are now looking forward to making box houses in design and technology and also learning about different kinds of homes around the world.
