Welcome to Year 4
Here are some of the Year 4 routines which should help you to keep organised.
In Year 4 you will be issued with a library book which can be changed once a week in our library session (usually Tuesday).
In addition, you will get a home reading book which should be recorded in your home reading record and changed regularly (at least once a week). Please get your parent to sign in your reading record to say when you have finished the book. You should bring your home reader into class every day.
You should also continue with wider reading and make sure that you read plenty of books from home or the public libraries. It is essential that you spend at least 15 minutes per day reading outside of school in order to improve your comprehension and fluency.
Homework will be given out on Friday and must be returned by the following Wednesday. This will include the weekly spellings which will be tested on Friday morning. Times tables will also be tested on Friday and it is essential that you keep on learning and practising them as they are an important part of the Maths that we cover in Year 4. The aim is to know your multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 x 12. Parents are to check and sign the blue homework diary every week.
Would you please keep your full indoor and outdoor PE kit in school at all times. This term, PE will take place every Wednesday and Thursday. In addition, you will have swimming lessons every Tuesday until January.
You do not need to bring any pencils, pens or pencil cases into class as all equipment will be provided by school.
I hope this explains the main class routines. If you have any more questions please ask me.
English - In the first half term we are focusing on Aesop's Fables. We'll do lots of work over 3 weeks, with the final outcome being that we'll write our own fabulous fables. We're then moving on to concentrating on the book 'Escape from Pompeii' by Christine Balit, which links well to our history unit on The Romans. After half term, we'll be looking at the specific skills of writing clear instructions. This unit is great fun and we get to evaluate whether instructions are clear, linking this to a piece of art work. Finally, we'll concentrate on producing high quality poetry using imagery.
Maths - We follow the NC. Pupils also enjoy a weekly session of Active Maths.
Art/D&T- Linked to our Roman focus, pupils will design and make their own mosaic tile.
History - Romans. We learn a great deal about Roman life and then move on to study the Roman Invasion of Britain and the impact the Romans have left on modern Britain. We enjoy a school trip to the Grosvenor Museum in Chester. This year, we'll be visiting the Museum for the Roman experience on Friday November 8th.
Music - Trafford Music services follow a fabulous scheme called 'Charanga.' The children will love it.
French - Gulay ( our French language assistant) delivers French, using the Catherine Cheater Scheme, every Friday.
PE - Sports galore this term! We have the fantastic Joe Brown delivering Dodgeball to the pupils every Wednesday morning. Joe Brown is representing Team GB at the Dodgeball World Championships in November. His lessons are high quality and we're lucky to have him. Pupils also have swimming lessons every Tuesday and curriculum PE Thursday afternoons.
Science - Our foci for the autumn term are: States of Matter and Circuits and Conductors.
Jigsaw - Being Me and Celebrating Difference.
