Art and Design at Cloverlea

Intent

The art and design curriculum at Cloverlea should embody personal expression, cultural understanding and creative responses to our world. The main principles of design are explored by each year group: line, shape, form, value, colour, space and texture. Pupils should have first-hand experience of all three areas of art, craft and design. They should have opportunities to access, learn about and engage directly with practitioners and examples of contemporary and historical art, craft and design in a range of cultural contexts. Cloverlea’s high quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

Art and design lessons at Cloverlea are organised in blocks or weekly lessons. The curriculum is enriched through the use of ICT and with cross-curricular connections. We have a wealth of high quality  resources for pupils to use during these lessons.

National Curriculum Subject content

Key stage 1

Pupils should be taught:

• to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products
• to use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination.
• to develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making.
• links to their own work.

Key stage 2

Pupils should be taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design.

Pupils should be taught:

• to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas
• to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay]
• about great artists, architects and designers in history.

Implementation

Curriculum

The Art & Design curriculum follows the National Curriculum Programme of Study and at Cloverlea we try to make cross-curricular links where applicable. This ensures coverage of skills and progression. The progression and range of skills can be seen in sketchbooks that are passed up through the year groups.

Teachers are responsible for the planning and delivery of their Art & Design curriculum. Art & Design is assessed throughout Key Stage 1 and 2 by using the i-Track. This allows the year group teacher to track attainment and progression.  Planning shows National Curriculum coverage and progression of a variety of mixed media is taught from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2. Long term overviews, medium and short term planning is done by the teachers.

Enrichment

At Cloverlea we welcome local artists into school for assemblies and workshops. We also use gallery visits as opportunities for classes to explore an artists work or a particular type of medium. As a school we encourage the children to exhibit their artwork in local galleries or a 'pop up' gallery that is set up in school.

Impact

At Cloverlea ongoing assessments take place throughout the year. Teachers use this information to inform future lessons; ensuring children are supported and challenged appropriately. This data is analysed on a termly basis to inform and address any trends or gaps in attainment.

Children in Foundation Stage are assessed within Expressive Arts and Design and their progress is tracked termly using the itrack tracker system. Age related expectation levels are reported to parents at the end of the reception year.
